Dr. Christos P. Tsekrekos

Dr. Christos P. Tsekrekos was born in Athens, Greece, in 1980. He is a graduate engineer (Dipl.-Ing.) of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (2003). In the course of his studies, he spent an academic semester at the Technical University of Denmark and carried out a six-week internship at the Institute of Applied Optics, Warsaw, Poland. His graduation thesis was on all-optical signal processing using semiconductor optical amplifiers. He holds a Ph.D. degree from the Eindhoven University of Technology, the Netherlands (2008). His doctoral research was focused on multimode fiber communications. In particular, it involved the study of mode group diversity multiplexing (MGDM), an optical MIMO technique. One of the outcomes of his Ph.D. research was the invention and demonstration of mode-selective spatial filtering (MSSF), a new optical technique that can greatly expand the potential of multimode fiber transmission. His doctoral research has received over 50 cross-references by other researchers. From 2008 to 2009 he joined Osaka University, Japan, as a Research Fellow supported by the Global Center of Excellence (GCOE) program of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). His research concerned access networks technologies. The main focus was on experimentally demonstrating an integrated platform of millimeter-wave radio-over-fiber (RoF) and baseband services in a reconfigurable access network. In addition, he carried out experimental work aiming at exploring the bandwidth limits of passive optical networks (PON) using light sources based on injection-locking. From 2009 to 2010, he collaborated in various FP7 European research projects with the Athens Information Technology (Intracom Holdings), Greece, as a senior Research Scientist. His research covered the areas of large-scale PONs, dispersion compensation by electronics and optical means, as well as RoF systems and optical-wireless integrated networks. He subsequently fulfilled his mandatory military service in the Corps of Research and Informatics of the Hellenic Army. Since November 2011, he is a postdoctoral Research Associate in the Photonics Technology Laboratory of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Dr. Tsekrekos has authored or co-authored 26 journal/conference papers, including three invited conference papers and being the first author of seven journal papers, and has edited a book chapter for Springer. He serves as a reviewer for IEEE and OSA journals.
