PTL-NKUA

The Photonics Technology Laboratory of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (PTL-NKUA) is a newly established entity that emerged from the Optical Communications Laboratory of Athens (OptComm-NKUA) of the same University. Initially and for a relatively long period until the end of 90’s the activities of the OptComm-NKUA were focused on telecom applications and related topics. Gradually, the group expanded its activities to other areas related to electronic and photonic components and subsystem development, but also applications such as sensing, biophotonics, etc.

The PTL-NKUA has research activities in all these areas starting from design and experimental characterization of advanced semiconductor – active or passive – devices, such as lasers, modulators, filters, etc. and extending to complex systems for advanced all-optical signal processing, low-power consumption communication systems, sensing, optical imaging and other related areas. In addition, the PTL has extensive expertise in design and development of analog and digital electronic subsystems for power efficient telecomm and sensing applications, as well as data acquisition and fusion analysis systems. The activities of the PTL-NKUA are supported by industrial contracts, European and National research projects.
